Within the topic of objective representation of tire characteristics two main areas of research can be identified; on the one hand the account for the actual friction pairing between tire compound material and road surface and on the other hand exact control of both internal and external tire boundary conditions during measurement. Today measurement on indoor tire test facilities represents the state of art in tire characteristics identification. Though this type of test facility allows for exact control of boundary conditions, the actual friction pairing between tire and an asphalt road surface is not represented correctly. In this research an approach is chosen in which operating conditions of the tires of a vehicle are measured in real driving conditions. In this way direct conclusions can be drawn on tire behavior. In this research specific attributes of tire measurement by means of vehicle measurement are investigated, preferred methods are presented an conclusions are drawn on potentials of this type of tire characteristic identification for tire and vehicle development. Furthermore, results for a sample of different tires are presented, allowing for comparison of tire characteristics identified on indoor test facilities, outdoor test facilities as well as using vehicle measurement.
