Steel pistons in diesel engines are well known in commercial vehicles since many years. This article shows the first series application of steel pistons in an aluminum crankcase with NANOSLIDE-coated liners for a passenger car diesel engine. This leads to significant thermodynamic benefits as well as advantages in friction losses at higher engine speeds and loads. Focal points in development are the optimization of piston cooling and noise comfort. Over all the steel piston improves fuel consumption in a V6 diesel engine by approximately 3 % or 3.5 g CO2/km. Steel pistons will be installed beginning in September 2014 in the V6 diesel engine OM642 from Mercedes-Benz in the current E-Class. Of particular interest here is the as yet unused combination of steel pistons with an aluminum crankcase with a NANOSLIDE-coated liner. In the E 350 BlueTEC, the steel piston in combination with further consumption-related measures (e.g. optimization of the exhaust gas turbocharger and camshaft) and in conjunction with the new NAG3 automatic transmission can help to achieve consumption values of 133 g CO2/km / 5.0 l/100 km in the NEDC. The steel piston alone improves consumption by approximately 3 % or 3,5 g CO2/km and, thanks to its thermodynamic and friction advantages, offers benefits across a very broad, customer-relevant range. The current E-Class with the V6 diesel engine OM642 including the steel piston reaches outstanding efficiency in its class. At the same time with the rollout in the V6 diesel engine OM642, the steel piston will also be installed in both four-cylinder entry diesel engines OM626 and OM607 with cast-iron crankcases in cooperation with Renault. It is therefore becoming an important element for Mercedes-Benz passenger car diesel engines.
