In Germany actually there are no approved construction methods for low noise concrete roads achieving pass-by level reductions (Dstro-values) better than -2 dB(A). In preceding research projects dense low noise road surface textures have been designed achieving pass-by level reductions up to -5 dB(A). These textures were to be produced in an appropriate durable material (here: UHPC) and thus be adapted to UHPC. First a sensitivity analysis was performed with several modifications of the original texture to find a texture design adapted to the specific properties of UHPC and of the chosen texturing method without affecting the noise reduction performance of the material. An adapted recipe for UHPC and an appropriate surface texturing method were developed for the implementation of a two-layer UHPC road (bearing layer + textured wear layer). In case of an optimal implementation of the road surface pass-by level reductions up to -6 dB(A) can be reached, actually large-scale productions achieve level reductions of -3 dB(A) to -4 dB(A). After the successful adaptation of paving technology to the specific properties of UHPC a construction method for durable low noise concrete roads with life cycles of approx. 50 years will be available.
