The maintenance of paved areas used by aircraft at airports covers a variety of aspects and is often only possible under difficult conditions. In view of current and forecast aircraft movements at Frankfurt Airport, developing an economically and technically optimized maintenance concept has become virtually unavoidable. In conjunction with Hansa-Nord-Labor GmbH, Ingenieur- und Prüfgesellschaft, Frankfurt Airport (Fraport AG) has drawn up a long-term maintenance planning concept. On the basis of visual assessments of structural conditions, checks of the paved areas, evenness measurements, the calculation of homogenous load capacity sections, and an investigation of the utilization patterns of existing paved areas, the remaining working life of the paved areas used by aircraft was forecast for each relevant section, i.e., for runways, taxiways, and aprons. Knowing the remaining working life of a paved area plays a decisive role when drawing up an economically and technically optimized maintenance plan.
