Both the vehicle tests and the subsequent simulation of improved fan drive system showed that an Advanced Thermal Management System utilizing a Dual Mode Fan Drive is an excellent approach to address two key drivers for cooling systems. The first one is system complexity where the benefit is given by integration of both drives in one product and the replacement of two fan drive systems by one which is principle of the Dual Mode Fan Drive concept. Secondly, to maintain or improve fuel economy is a challenge since the efficiency chain for an electro-mechanic product is worse compared to pure mechanical drive. The testing and the simulation showed that in real world cycles the losses of mechanical and electro-mechanical are very similar. The advantages given by the Dual Mode Fan Drive e.g. the possibility to run the fan above the input speed of the drive allow to conclude that this product is an advantageous component for future cooling systems. The new operation areas of this fan drive will allow a redesign of the overall cooling system including the drive ratio of the fan drive. Improved cooling performance at low engine speeds is a very positive side effect, and can be an additional driver for the new product.
