Copper and copper alloys are used in a wide range of innovative applications. Especially in the field of communication technologies and automotive applications, electrical properties of copper and copper alloys are evident for essential components. Aim of this paper is to show the current state of research on the development of copper alloys with low contents of added elements to substitute highly conductive electrolytic tough-pitch copper (Cu-ETP) used for signal conductors in automotive applications. The driving force to substitute Cu-ETP is to reduce production costs, to lower weight and to save space, as low alloyed copper alloys may reduce wire diameters compared to Cu-ETP. This paper focuses on the achievement of fundamental material properties of low alloyed copper alloys and reports the current state of research. Based on the gained experiences, corresponding processing parameters will be validated and optimized to get reproducible material properties of the new group of alloys. Profound knowledge should be transferred into standard processes.
