The objectives set for the development and production of the BMW i3 exterior follow a holistic approach. In addition to the usual orientations towards the function, quality and cost of the components, here the focus is placed on a sustainable manufacturing process. For the new vehicle architecture, new concepts must be developed and implemented on an industrial scale even for the outer skin. For example, for the front door outer panels, processing the selected material, PP/EPDM TV30, by injection-compression molding was made possible. The necessity for this arose from the demand of the styling department for a flat appearance without an intrusive 'character line' or ribbing (which would have to be hidden) for positioning a central film gate. Injection-compression molding allows the door skin to be injected from a film gate on the bottom edge of the component despite flow lengths of almost 1000 mm.
