This paper addresses the optimization of the shifting strategy of automatic transmissions in commercial vehicles with fixed routes or characteristic driving cycles based on genetic algorithms. First, a model of a commercial vehicle describing the driving cycle, the driving resistance, the automatic transmission, and the combustion engine is introduced for computing the fuel consumption. Then, an optimization for minimizing the fuel consumption of the commercial vehicle by parameterizing the shifting strategy of the automatic transmission for a fixed route or a characteristic driving cycle based on genetic algorithms is studied. Finally, a framework for MATLAB/Simulink combining the model and the genetic algorithm is presented. Simulation results indicate a significant potential for fuel consumption reduction.
