This doctoral thesis analyzes the climate impact mitigation potential and related costs given by the combined optimization of aircraft design parameters and flight profiles. Therefore the present thesis developed a comprehensive multidisciplinary simulation workflow including detailed models for aircraft design, propulsion and emissions, aircraft operations, climate impact and airline economics. The simulation workflow is applied to determine the cost-benefit ratio of global average temperature change and operating costs resulting for different operation scenarios. The analysis includes the world fleets of a current representative long-range aircraft and a novel climate-optimized aircraft configuration that are operated on a global route network with varying flight profiles.
