The efficiency of hybrid vehicle depends on the powertrain topology and its operation strategy, and even the calibration of the strategy, which has the most important impact on the fuel consumption and emissions. This paper present a hybrid operation strategy, which works cycle independently and always in the consumption optimal driving mode. This strategy is called IAV Optybrid Generic. IAV Optybrid Generic is based on the energetic evaluation of all driving modes and feeds back the cost optimal mode in dependency of a balanced state of charge. IAV Optybrid Generic can be pre-optimised for defined driving cycles and can also optimise the operation mode online, cycle independently under recognition of the specific driving situation in real traffic. The fuel consumption results on the actual traffic and driving situation, the calibration of the operation strategy should be adapted online on the controller. The advantage of this new online method coupled with IAV Optybrid Generic is called IAV Optybrid Plus. The special advantage of IAV Optybrid Plus is the independency of a GPS based navigation system, just handling the standard CAN-signals. The procedure for setting up a cycle independent hybrid strategy was described. The cycle independent strategy was compared to a cycle predefined strategy and the fuel consumption savings are shown. The fuel consumption benefit for the cycle independent strategy is up to 6% in a daily driven cycle with extra urban parts.
