Under normal oil transmission pipeline operating conditions, corrosion occurs by an electrochemical mechanism. Four fundamental elements that are required for electrochemical corrosion to take place are: anode (A), cathode (C), metallic conductor (M), and electrolytic conductor (E) (ACME). Crude oil being a non-conducting electrolyte does not support corrosion. However, if the crude oil contains water, then corrosion may take place in those locations where water drops out of crude oil and comes in contact with the metallic surface. The bulk crude oil may indirectly affect the corrosion by influencing the locations where water accumulates, by influencing the type of emulsion (oil-in-water or water-in-oil), by impacting the wettability of phases (oil-wet, water-wet or mixed-wet) on the steel surface, as well as by supplying chemicals (corrosive species or inhibitive species) that can partition into the water phase. An operator can minimize the probability of internal corrosion in oil transmission pipelines by: (1) identifying the locations where water may accumulate in the pipeline; (2) determining the emulsion, wettability, and influence of crude oil on the corrosivity of water phase at the point of entry of crude into the pipeline; and (3) establishing the frequency of cleaning and inhibitor pig runs and then running them at the established frequency (if necessary). The industry can increase public confidence that oil transmission pipelines including those that transport heavy oil from Canadian oilsands are safe by making the information and data from activities (1) through (3) publically available.
