Considering the efforts taken over the last few years to reduce both fuel consumption and CO2 on it is quite surprising that thermoelectric has not yet become a part of that strategy. However, thermoelectrics has gained more and more interest, especially over the last 5 years. Even so, the first thermoelectric generator used in a passenger car is still to be assembled. This is not because of general drawbacks of the thermoelectric principle nor is it due to the expected amount of power generated. In fact most of the obstruction stems from a few technological and moneywise hurdles one is not yet able to overcome. A catchphrase for the former would be "thermocyclic stability" while the latter might be characterized by terms like "material prizes" and "expensive handicraft production processes". The Behr Company together with highly competent project partners is currently going to tackle the problems mentioned in order to come up with suitable solutions for both thermoelectric power generation and thermoelectric heat pumping.
