New trends in engine air filtration for trucks are strongly driven by installation space and high filtration efficiency derived from Euro VI legislation. Modern trucks will use mass flow sensor systems, which need protection from dirt to assure correct function over life time. This leads to efficiency requirements of more than 99,95% for the filter media. Above that the installation space, which was previously used for state-of-the-art round type air intake modules is in future trucks occupied by the SCR system and its tank. So the entire air filtration package finds its place behind the driver's cab. Both the resulting high requirements regarding filtration performance and limited installation space are challenging for future air intake modules. The answer to this is a new, very flexible filter element concept with big plasticized end caps. The special benefit of compact filter element design and entire module can particularly be enlarged by implementation of a high efficient filter media with long life time. Development of this special kind of filter media requires a deep insight into the physics of filtration effects on the micro scale. This is accomplished by using both experimental and simulation tools. Simulation results obtained by using new Lattice-Boltzmann methods and a highly sophisticated geometrical reconstruction method show a high degree of correlation to measurement results. Future development will focus both on extending filter element performance regarding life time by enhancement of existing filter media and implementation of new modules into the MAHLE simulation tool in order to predict filtration performance for different types of dust. Special efforts will be put on the implementation of soot particles into the simulation tool in order to predict filter element lifetime closer to reality.
