Young and inexperienced drivers between 18 and 24 years are still overrepresented in fatal crashes. Accident analysis revealed that hazard and risk perception play a significant role in young drivers accidents. In order to support young drivers by advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), detailed knowledge of the driving skills and problems young drivers have are necessary. Aiming to assess the gaze and driving behavior of inexperienced drivers in potentially critical driving situations, a field study was conducted. In this user study, 48 participants (24 inexperienced and 24 experienced drivers) performed three potentially critical driving situations in real traffic. Statistical analysis of the data showed that gaze and driving behavior of inexperienced drivers are not significantly different from that of experienced drivers. Specific ADAS for young drivers, however, do not seem to be necessary.
