With the introduction of EU6, Gasoline DI engines have not only to meet traditional exhaust emission limits by mass, on top the emissions of particulates will be limited by number (PN). In addition the legislation mandates that the limits have not only to be met during the traditional emission test cycle, but real world driving conditions, including significantly higher load driving has to be considered as well. The implementation of a coated Particulate Filter enables meeting not only previous demands, but the new particulate number threshold of 6×10E11/km in parallel. This applies not only for the traditional emission test cycle, but for highly transient and high load conditions in parallel. During development of coated Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPF), high priority was given to a minimum of pressure drop, to limit the negative impact on maximum power output. With currently proposed solutions, we measured no negative impact on fuel consumption or CO2 emissions during customer relevant driving conditions. The test results show that the future emission limits can reliably be met over the full legally required distance.
