The development of an automatically controlled shift in a modern commercial vehicle requires sophisticated coordination of the main powertrain control units for engine, transmission, and clutch, together with drivetrain and vehicle components as well as the connecting actuators and sensors. Software in the loop (SiL)-Simulation gives a very attractive development tool for this task. In contrast to HiL and development within the real vehicle it can be applied much earlier without having the final hardware. The development of the Daimler Powershift Gearboxes is supported by a variety of SiL simulations of the mechanical powertrain system coupled with the ECU software functionality. It has gradually become a strategic, economic tool to virtually test ECU and hardware functionality simultaneously from early development stages on. The current SiL method and process is described with regard to usability and illustrated by examples.
