The Institute of Metal Forming at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the MgF Magnesium Flachprodukte GmbH Freiberg (Germany) are currently working on a new production technology for magnesium coils up to 1.0 mm thickness, based on Twin Roll Casting (TRC) and Strip Rolling in industrial scale. Magnesium strips produced by TRC and subsequent rolling offer very good processing properties and are partly superior to conventionally produced sheets. Economical advantages result from a shortened process chain whose technology leads to a favorable initial condition for strip production. The technology of Twin Roll Casting and Strip Rolling on a four high-reversing mill are specified. The properties of magnesium strips out of the alloy AZ31 and AM50 are described comprehensively. Their application for the production of automotive light weight parts is shown on examples.
