In the recent construction of offshore structures, the structural materials are often required to possess sufficient crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) properties as well as 460 MPa or higher yield strength and good impact toughness at down to -60 °C. To meet such requirements, the authors have developed the advanced welding consumables for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), submerged arc welding (SAW) and flux cored arc welding (FCAW). For SMAW and SAW consumables, the basicity of flux was adjusted to reduce the oxygen content in the weld metal, thereby achieving the good impact toughness at down to -60 °C, the high yield strength of over 500 MPa, and the high CTOD value at down to -40 °C. The FCAW consumable has been improved with optimized deoxidizers and appropriate additions of Ni and Mn to produce the weld metal having the very fine microstructure, thus achieving both the yield strength of over 690 MPa and the good impact toughness at down to -60 °C.
