In order to further improve fuel efficiency the efficiency engine concept is described and compared to a classical downsizing concept. The efficiency engine approach is characterised by significant friction reduction on a modular base serving the high volume market that requires a cost effective approach at medium power density. In this paper engine size considerations also reflecting future demands due to different driving cycles as well as results from component testrig, engine testbed and chassis roller are discussed. The content comprises not only technical data but also the way from 1st concept up to realisation in vehicle; finishing with a condensed summary and future oriented outlook.
