It is shown clearly that the failure mode in micro hybrid cycle testing is caused by sulphation of the negative active mass. Carbon materials like graphite and activated carbon could improve the cycle life by allowing less sulphate to be formed and agglomerated. The sulphate agglomeration is concentrated at the lower parts of the plate which is caused by the current intake from the top of the plate. Optimized grid design as well as new cell configurations in combination with the active mass improvements could lead to significant better performance of the lead acid technology in micro hybrid cycle life testing. The positive active mass seems to be pretty much unchanged by the micro hybrid cycling and do not cause the battery to fall. The exact mechanism of the chemical and physical reactions which are introduced by the carbon addition are not yet fully understood which requires more research work in this field. Lead acid technology has proven that it could fulfil the existing requirements of Micro Hybrids and also show the potential to fulfil the future needs as well.
