The idea sound as simple as convincing. Instead of refueling an electric vehicle by handling a cable, the driver just parks his vehicle comfortably over the charge coil when using wireless charging. The charging process takes place automatically as soon as the vehicle is parked accordingly. The widespread use of wireless inductive charging is still a future vision. To research the technology and verify suitability of wireless charging for automotive applications, Conductix-Wampfler GmbH and Daimler AG have started several projects. The first joined project was funded by the German federal ministry of environment (BMU, Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Reaktorsicherheit). Work was focused an technology research and complementary solutions to form a comprehensive solution package. With the projects above, both battery-electric as well as hybrid-electric vehicles, in the form of a vehicle with a range extender, are in field testing and shown performance exceeding expectations expressed when entering the first project. Despite that there is still some way to go for an "automotive" product. The integration can be taken further, even car conceptual integrations are thinkable, weight, volume and cost should be further optimized, automotive requirements implemented further and maybe extra features added to the solution. An important factor, when it comes to public charging infrastructure, will be standardization to assure interoperation capability in between different car brands and as well different component manufacturer components. Looking more generally on electric mobility and customer acceptance it is obvious that the industry must offer solution which make it to use them, any restrictions associated with them will limit acceptance. Wireless charging will be one of the enabling factors for electric mobility therefore. Besides the technological solutions, it will be important that the politics and other stakeholders are forming a basis creating trust and giving confidence that electric cars and infrastructure installations will not be a questionable investment. Technology can be an enabler, but the basis must be formed beyond the possibilities of technology. Technology is on the way.
