Public transport is nowadays one of the most important and popular way to reach a destination. It is comfortable, generally available and cheap. Substantial part of this type of transport in almost all cities are city buses. Due to fact that buses should serve the people and provide jobs for bus drivers its ride and handling performances should be optimal. For this reason a virtual assessment of the new proposed suspension components is tremendously useful if it can be applied in the early stage of development. In a very first phase some characteristics of spring-damper components can be optimized and some elements can be change to improve some performances in terms of comfort and driving behaviour. Ride and handling are important areas for safety and improvement of vehicle control during driving. This task is developed at AGH University of Science and Technology in the EU-founded project EUREKA-CHASING, in which functional virtual prototyping has been applied. This paper is focused on methodology based on multi-body simulation for multi-domain optimization issues. The assessment consists of fully equipped multi-body model made in Virtual.Lab (LMS software) of city bus with rigid suspension parts and flexible superstructure (FEM made in HyperMesh- Altair software). Multibody models are one of the easiest and the most efficient method to simulate body dynamic behaviour. To make the model more realistic, all board systems such as ECAS or ABS have been simulated in AMESim (LMS software). The model has been developed for the purpose of calculating kinematics of the suspension what can be use to optimize ride and handling performance. To make simulations more efficient, model has been updated with experimental data measured in critical points of the real city bus suspension by minimizing an error between numerical and experimental curves. Correlation between experimental and numerical data has also been presented in this paper. Spring-damper elements characteristics are expected to be design variables while ISO standards for comfort and index for handling calculations are considered as design objectives. To confirm expectations about design variables some sensitivity studies have been carried out which resulted in the identification of critical variables for suspension design. Described methodology can be used for multi-domain optimization process which results in finding optimal values for bus suspension system. The entire procedure is made automatically from calculations to synthesis of the output data. Such a performance lets to decrease time to marked new buses. The results of the application of presented methodology have been shown and some interesting considerations have been derived.
