The report identifies that CNG (compressed natural gas) in dual fuel heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), with gas supplied from the high pressure Local Transmission System (LTS) networks, offers significant benefits. The potential for CNG as a fuel in the UK is very good as the savings that can be achieved are significant. The figures produced in this report show CO2 emissions reductions in comparison to diesel over the entire Life-Cycle-Analysis of CNG including: (1) 35% less emissions from Well-to-Tank. (2) 15.2% reduction from 60/40 CNG/Diesel blend from Tank-to-Wheel emissions. (3) Amounting to an overall reduction of 19% from diesel trucks to CNG/diesel dual fuel trucks. This means that for every truck using 1,000,000 litres of diesel a year switching to a 60/40 blend will save around 600 tonnes of CO2 per year. These figures incorporate the switch to LTS filling stations where a 20% saving will be achieved in comparison to the LP (Liquid Petroleum)grid where as much as 80% less energy is used to compress the CNG. There are also savings as the gas is dry so no drier is needed and there is negligible methane leakage in the high pressure grids of the UK so no CH4 is lost to the atmosphere. These two alone could account for as much as 1.07 gCO2/MJ for the Well-to-Tank emissions.
