This article investigated the rattle phenomenon in the manual transmission with specific clutch types under both the WOT (wide-open throttle) condition and the coast condition. In order to examine the linear and the nonlinear dynamic characteristics, a real physical driveline was examined and modeled by employing real-life multi-staged clutch dampers. The contribution of this article is summarized as follows. First, the mathematical model for the multistaged clutch damper was developed. This model advanced previous studies which have focused on only a two-staged symmetric clutch damper. Thus, three real-life clutch dampers were implemented to examine the torsional vibro-impacts. Second, drag torque estimation techniques under both the WOT condition and the coast condition were suggested by assuming that the vehicle is in the steady-state condition. Thus, the vibro-impacts under severe vehicle driving conditions can be simulated by employing the suggested drag torque models. Finally, the gear rattle criteria were constructed on the basis of the 5DOF linear system model. This has advanced the previous study34 by showing the relationship of the gear tooth contact point to key parameters in the torsional system. Also, the effects of multi-staged clutch designs were investigated, which leads to a better understanding of the roles of the transitional angles, the pre-loads, and the stiffness properties of the clutch damper.
