Assessment of a passenger car hybrid concept and it's applicability in city buses and delivery trucks with special focus on feasibility and affordability. The drivetrain is based on an extended range transmission combining one electric motor and combustion engine into a drivetrain for hybrid electric vehicle. Between serial hybrid concepts and conventional start/stop systems, this extended range concept is standing out with lowest add-on cost but still significant fuel savings capability. The transmission concept is applicable for integration into a conventional combustion engine driven platform to make it a hybrid electrical vehicle. The study has been ranging from transmissions with prioritized electric drive with combustion drive as pure extended opportunityT to the concept herein presented. During the concept study properties as affordability, feasibility, reduced complexity and reduced amount of gears have been leading design goals. The resulting concept is applicable for integration into hybrid electrical personal vehicles but focus has been to optimize for integration into city bus and delivery truck applications. The basic buildup of the concept is a combustion engine delivering tractive force via a torque interrupted four speed transmission. An electric motor, with possibility to be decoupled, is delivering tractive force via one speed ratio directly to final drive of the transmission, as a conventional parallel hybrid drive. All regeneration and charging of batteries is done with the electric motor when applicable. Reverse drive is by electric motor. Powershifting is provided by the electric motor which is used for torque filling of the torque interrupted shifts. The unique property of the concept is having long ratio setup of the four speed transmission and a supplementary shorter electrical first gear which combines the total transmission into a five speed system. The long ratio setup together with electric motor support optimizes the system for low amount of gears and still provides a proper top vehicle speed. The optimized gear layout and non-complex transmission design ensures the concept to be realistic, affordable, efficient and reliable. With this transmission integrated together with a balanced setup of energy storage, the resulting drivetrain will be affordable and efficient. The transmission concept supports a wide range of hybrid setups, from full hybrid vehicles with smaller electrical motor to plugin hybrids with extended range capability.
