Roominess is an individual feeling that results from visual and haptic perception of a 3-dimensional room surrounding the user. A subjective assessment considering experiences and expectations leads to a personal level of roominess. In a vehicle haptic perception, the view to the interior and the view to the outside are relevant for roominess. The feeling of roominess is present during the whole journey. According to the comfort hierarchy all lower needs like environmental comfort and comfort of posture and operation have to be met so that roominess can enhance the overall comfort. As the awareness of discomfort caused by physical aspects arises only after a certain time roominess has an impact on the rating of comfort. Thus, during the vehicle layout conception the four gestalt elements of the vehicle interior structure, shape and surface, color and trim as well as graphics should be designed to support the spatial perception of the vehicle interior. A good spatial perception is the basis for an individually high rated roominess. Conflicting goals have to be balanced in order to maximize the overall comfort. Discomfort has to be avoided by providing enough space for an ergonomic posture. By consideration of these aspects comfort even in smaller electric vehicles may be augmented by a roomy interior.
