The proof of the cross wind stability is necessary for the homologation of rail vehicles for the passenger traffic. A basis of the proof are the calculation and assessment of the characteristic wind curves (CWC) of vehicles to what this contribution refers. For the calculation of the CWC, the aerodynamic and vehicle dynamic characteristics are necessary: The aerodynamic characteristics are described by aerodynamic coefficients which are determined by wind tunnel tests or CFD calculations. The driving characteristics are determined by the construction (coach, bogie, springs, masses) of the vehicle and are represented by static or dynamic mechanical models (multi-body systems). Under use of different wind scenarios, time-variable wind the behaviour of the vehicle can be calculated with cross wind. The criterion for the cross wind safety is derived from the tilting process. The cross wind behaviour of a vehicle is characterised by the characteristic wind curves (CWC) which represent the maximum wind speed the vehicle can withstand at different vehicle speeds and unbalanced accelerations. The present article deals with the calculation of the CWC and the judgement of the driving characteristics within the scope of the activity as an EBA approved expert for vehicles in the area of cross wind with the main focus in the proof of the CWC. The proof as an expert does not contain the judgement of the aerodynamic coefficients and the wind tunnel tests. For the proof of the cross wind safety of vehicles different national and international standards exist. Basically the proof is adduced when the calculated CWC of the vehicle are in all points higher or equal than the correlated reference CWC which are defined in most standards. At European level there exist the TSI HS RST and EN 14067-6. In Germany the cross wind proof is done according to the RIL807.04 and a proof is necessary for all passenger vehicles with a maximum speed of vmax ≥ 160 km/h. In this article the present experiences from the point of view of the expert are described in using the RIL 807.04.
