For heavy duty road transport mainly tractor semitrailer combinations are in use, whereby the trailer is only a drawn unit without any drive technology. Against the background of rising energy costs and stricter emission limits a concept for recuperation of kinetic energy, electrical storage and supply of auxiliary drives on semitrailers was developed. Due to the high power demands of the cooling unit a refrigerated semitrailer was chosen as an example. Within this paper the technical concept of the corresponding research vehicle and the objectives of the project as well as the planned simulation based approach to optimize the system setup are described. To operate the cooling unit a standard semitrailer was equipped with two generators, a high voltage battery and inverters. All components are connected to an intermediate voltage circuit, which allows the simple integration of additional consumers.
