The travelling check valve (TCV) pump is based on a new class of valve, and is designed for use in pneumatic or hydraulic tube transport. In this article, inventor Ian Doig describes the basic function, design details, advantages and potential applications of the TCV pump. Among its claimed advantages are transport distances and elevations unlimited by pump pressure, and a gentle mode of action suitable for handling delicate materials. Long TT (Tube Transport) systems may require 1000 TCVs per kilometre (if the TCVs in a recycle-to-base tube are included). Pig makers would welcome the opportunity to supply such demand. However, shorter TCV pumps with continuously reticulated TCVs can also be devised. Devices for inserting and removing pigs from operating pipelines already exist . Where TCVs do not need to be present throughout the TT system, such devices could be devised for continuously extracting TCVs from downstream, and continuously re-inserting them upstream, of a TCV pump. Higher downstream pressures could cause the simple USVs of the TCV shown in a Figure to fail by inverting (like an umbrella in a high wind). More robust TCVs avoid this.
