The main goal of this study is to research the adjustable damping characteristic of a new magneto-rheological fluid damper based on hydro-pneumatic suspension of heavy vehicles. After structural style and working principle are proposed, non-linear mathematic modeling of whole damper are established theoretically. For validating this new design, an experimental set up on a 200 kN servo-hydraulic testing machine is constructed to evaluate the performance of the prototype. Different methods by means of changing velocities and control currents with 50 mm sinusoidal amplitude are tested. Experimental results confirm the goodness of both the adjustable damping and fail-safe characteristics, reaching a perceivable improvement in the adaptive capacity to different terrains. So in the future semi-active hydro-pneumatic suspension based on magneto-rheological damper could be designed to improve the performance of ride quality and stability, as compared with traditional hydro-pneumatic suspension on military heavy vehicles.
