As a part of crash sensing calibration development, vehicle manufacturers typically conduct various dynamic abuse tests to determine the "No-Deploy" thresholds. Examples of dynamic abuse tests are driving over potholes, gravel surfaces and curbs at various speeds. Literature shows that one of the most challenging "No-Deploy" tests is driving over a curb (or curb impact tests). In this study, a set of curb impact tests were conducted at different speeds and with different vehicle models, which may include conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles. The test data were analyzed with an average deceleration criterion to assess the severity of the impacts. This paper also compares signal characteristics of the curb impact tests to crash tests, some of which could be used for developing "No-Deploy" and "Must-Deploy" thresholds. The analyses of dynamic abuse tests data are presented in previous sections of this paper and the following are the main findings: 1) The curb impact pulses can be characterized by two impulses: front tire-curb and rear-tire curb impact. Each of these impulses can have two spikes due to different timing of left and right tires impact. 2) The magnitude of the first impulse is typically higher than the second one. 3) The average deceleration concept of the first spike enabled the clear classification of uni-body and truck vehicles. 4) The analyzed data show that 35 mph test has either lower (or similar) average deceleration than (or to) 30 mph test, which can be explained by an equation. 5) The characteristics of curb impact deceleration pulses are different from barrier crash tests: deceleration pulse of curb impact oscillates around zero axis and decays faster than crash tests; delta velocity of a curb impact reaches close to zero while the barrier crash tests increases to test speed. 6) Curb impacts with brakes and different approach angles are not investigated in this paper.
