During recent years the 12 V power net has been upgraded by several extensions, using DC/DC power converters in order to realize vehicle functions like Stop-Start or the supply of consumers like power steering or windshield heater. For the next generation of Micro Hybrid Vehicles, a new power net architecture will be necessary, to implement additional functions like coasting, regenerative braking and traction assist (creeping / boosting). This paper presents an overview encompassing the different 48 V power net architectures for several applications and the potentials of those new architectures. Furthermore the essential components of the 48 V power net will be presented in detail: the DC/DC power converter and the 48 V energy storage unit. The dual voltage DC/DC converter introduces power electronics with 1.5 kW up to 3 kW power rating into Micro Hybrid vehicles. This power electronics device must be optimized with respect to efficiency in order to facilitate the preferred method of passive convection cooling. In parallel, the size must be optimized to enable utilization in many vehicles. Charge acceptance is the focus topic for the energy storage unit to make the best use of regenerative braking potential. Therefore an implementation using lithium ion battery cells with battery management electronics is preferred.
