The paper presents the model-configuration kit called MoKoBa derived from the translation of the German Modell-Konfigurations-Baukasten. The objective is to simplify and accelerate the multi-body simulation process of light-rail vehicles by automating the modelling pre-process. The MoKoBa consists of multiple submodels preconfigured within the MBS-software SIMPACK. These sub-models can be joined to each other and the model parameters can be adjusted via the MoKoBa-GUI to achieve the desired partial or complete vehicle model. First, a model kit for the simulation of trams is developed. The modules are substructure models of components and assemblies with fixed interfaces which follow a strict modeling regulation, inspired by the black-or gray-box principle. The second part of the project MoKoBa is the development of a graphical user interface. Via the interface partial or complete vehicle models of trams can be configured based on the stored model kit. Model kit and configuration software follow the principle that allows on the one hand the configuration of multi-body simulation models to non-SIMPACK specialists, but on the other hand also keeps the possibility to change the model directly in the SIMPACK preprocessor. Furthermore the extensibility, i.e. the easy integration of new modules of the model kit, sometimes with varying levels of detail, is the main subject during the development of the configuration software. In the future, the configuration software will be able to automatically start and evaluate standard simulation tasks, such as studies on ride comfort or on the derailment. Beside the use of the multi-body simulation software SIMPACK the MoKoBa configuration tool also provides the ability to integrate own analysis tools. Currently this includes a MATLAB algorithm to configure the wheel/rail-contact geometry and in the near future, a function generator for the definition of characteristic curves for nonlinear spring stiffness, damping etc.
