An e-CVT (electronic continuously variable transmission) with electric motors and planetary gears is a widely used configuration in the powertrain of an HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) and offers an effective way of improving the fuel economy and the emissions performance. In this paper, an FSPG (four-shaft planetary gear) e-CVT HEV was developed. The main components are the ICE, the FSPG, the electric motors E1 and E2, the brakes B1 and B2 and the battery. By analysing the structure and analogy of the FSPG e-CVT HEV, designing the control strategy of the HCS and performing experiments on a bench and a chassis dynamometer, the following conclusions were derived. (1) A comparative analysis of the THS III, GM two-mode and the FSPG e-CVTs was carried out. The FSPG e-CVT HEV is different from the THS III and the GM two-mode HEVs. (2) The HCS was developed independently. It has four forward-working statuses and one reverse-working status when the control strategy operates in the EV mode, the ICE start mode and the HEV mode respectively. (3) The HCS functions well in coordinating the torque distribution among the ICE, E1 and E2 and in protecting the battery. The HCS as a multiple-energy management system corresponds to maximizing the system efficiency and to improving the dynamic fuel economy and the emissions performance. (4) To evaluate the fuel economy of the FSPG e- CVT HEV, nine NEDC tests were carried out on a chassis dynamometer. The results demonstrate that the FFC of test 2 is 5.4 1/100 km and is the best energy consumption; thus, the four-shaft e-CVT HEV can realize good fuel economy. The NOx emissions performance needs to be improved by modifying the HCS control strategy and EMS calibration in future experiments.
