Titanium and titanium alloys have been widely used in civil aviation due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent corrosion resistance and compatibility with a composite structure. Typical applications are airframes and engines. However, to maintain a prominent position in the commercial aerospace industry, future efforts must be directed toward the cost reduction of the titanium structure. A brief history of the development of titanium for aerospace application, including application areas and reasons why aviation manufacturing uses titanium, is introduced in this study. Its future trend is analyzed and discussed as well, including information on trends of the alloy development, melting technologies, present and emerging manufacturing technologies, new alloys and some new techniques for producing low cost titanium. The paper is structured as follows. 1. Introduction. 2. Titanium used in commercial aerospace. 3. Melting and forging of premium quality alloys: cold hearth melting; isothermal forging. 4. Several new materials recently developed: Ti-5553 (metastable beta-titanium alloy with nominal composition Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr-0.5 Fe); ATI 425 titanium alloy; Ti-54M; Fine-grain Ti-6Al-4V alloys for superplastic forming; Low-ultrasonic noise titanium. 5. Some cost reduction technologies: single melt-hearth only; skull melting; solid freeform fabrication. 6. Conclusion.
