ILC Dover is a privately owned company which specialises in the manufacture of materials and structures that are capable of standing up to extreme environments, including battlefields, chemical disasters and outer space. In producing these materials and structures, the company employs advanced technologies for joining and sealing complex multiple-layers of so-called "soft goods" such as textiles, films, foils and plastics, using advanced materials such as Kevlar aramids and Vectran liquid crystal polymers. The company was founded in 1947 as International Latex, a division of Playtex, to manufacture bras and girdles. However, it is best known for its 50 years of work with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the US military. During this period, it has developed numerous concepts and innovations in technical textiles and functional fabrics, including antimicrobial treatments, cooling vests, dust mitigation, electronic textiles, power assisted spacesuits, protection against radiation, selfhealing properties, shape memory materials, shape morphing and structural health monitoring. The company groups its activities into six key categories: spacesuits; engineered inflatables; space inflatables; pharmaceuticals andbiqpharmaceuticals; lighter-than-air structures (LTAs); and personal protection equipment (PPE). In the engineered inflatables category, the company has three businesses involved in the production, inspection and testing of inflated structures of up to 600,000ft3 (16,990 m3) in volume, namely Engineered Inflatables, Space Inflatables and Lighter-Than-Air Structures (LTAs). It also makes envelopes for use by other companies in the manufacture of large inflatable structures ranging in volume from 56,000 ft3 to 4,000,000 ft3. In addition, the company makes engineered inflatable structures for the military, including advanced technology ballutes, brilliant anti-tank (BAT) submunition decelerators, internal structure brilliant anti-tank (BAT) finutes, engineered inflatable floats for extreme environments and torpedo recovery systems. During the course of its history, the company has built up extensive design, testing and prototyping expertise which can be applied to industrial markets. As such, it is not purely a development-based organisation, but has formed strong partnerships and established technologies which extend to the commercial sector.
