Within the last 50 years, a part of the continuous increasing volume of goods transportation was compensated by improving the transport efficiency of the used commercial vehicles. Weight increase caused by legal specifications or better equipped vehicles, were compensated by lightweight design. The vehicle mass is included in all road resistance terms excepting the aerodynamic drag. So there are two reasons for lightweight design. A curb weight reduction of weight sensitive vehicles increases the payload and reduces the fuel consumption and the CO2 emission per ton kilometer. A curb weight reduction of volume sensitive vehicles with the same payload improves the fuel consumption. In order to reach a holistic lightweight construction approach, the 4 ranges "manufacturing lightweight construction", "material lightweight construction", "form lightweight construction" and "concept lightweight construction" have to be implemented integrative. Different approaches are necessary to receive light, mission-optimized vehicles. First the vehicle equipment can be optimized compared to standard vehicles on the appropriate requirements of the respective targeted application. Possibly this can be realized with smaller fuel and AdBlue tanks or vehicle batteries with smaller capacity. Additionally e.g. aluminum rims or supersingle tires at the drive axle can replace the heavier standard components on the component level. Todays Iadder frames were weight optimized by lightweight materials, optimized shapes and integrated functions Even higher benefits are offered by new lightweight structure concepts. Beside new materials also new manufacturing methods and a support structure geometry adapted to the available design space can be contemplated. An economical realization of lightweight design is influenced by many factors. Examples are Diesel price, transport revenue, toll legislation and the expected CO2 legislation.
