This lecture shall give a brief introduction of the company ANDRITZ Maerz with the emphasis laid on batch-type furnaces and here especially with the focus on the heat treatment of railway wheels in a car-bottom pusher-type furnace. The following lecture gives an introduction to the technology for heat treatment of high-speed wheels and is being illustrated by means of the reference plants already built. Due to the high strain an optimum heat treatment and furthermore the quenching of railway wheels is absolutely necessary in order to achieve the required safety and stability needed to withstand the extremely high speeds. The lecture deals with the description of the materials applied, furthermore the material changes due to the heat treatment and the corresponding changes caused by the heat treatment process performed. A further item is the realization of the required properties which can be achieved by applying the heat treatment line consisting of the cooling-down process after shaping of the railway wheels, carried out by the corresponding cooling-down line. Further items are the description of the reheating furnace before the hardening process, the description of the high-quality hardening machines for individual hardening of the railway wheels and the subsequent heat treatment by means of a corresponding tempering furnace, also designed as car bottom pusher-type furnace. Corresponding layouts show the possibility how to design such heat treatment lines and the references give an overview of the customers experience in the heat treatment of high-speed wheels. Furthermore we refer to other fields of application for the heat treatment, for instance of rings.
