In this paper a method for determining the stability margin of an EPS is presented. First of all a linearized model of the controller and of the electromechanical components is required. As some of the electromechanical system parameters are unknown they have to be determined using excitation measurements and system identification methods. The models are implemented in MATLAB/Simulink and integrated into the tool that has to be validated afterwards. Therefore the gear is made unstable in the vehicle and in the simulation and the results are correlated. To determine the stability margin of the system a certain tuning/software parameter set (e.g. .par-file) is imported. Furthermore the operating points at which the stability has to be computed have to be provided. The calculation of the stability margin is done automatically and the results are exported. The described procedure has been utilised successfully in various applications and safe-guarded the release of numerous steering system configurations into mass production. With software algorithms becoming increasingly complex, and with the advent of new controller structures such a process is becoming more and more important to guarantee the stability of EPS systems. Especially the growing number of tuning variants increases the need to reduce the efforts required to analyse the tuning with respect to stability margin. Therefore an integrated tool chain is required where as many steps as possible are automated. TRW as global leader in Automotive Safety is continuously improving this process.
