SARTRE is a European Commission FP7 co-funded project that aims to develop strategies and technologies to allow vehicle platoons to operate on normal public highways with significant environmental, safety and comfort benefits. In the concept phase, different use Gases are defined and verified via simulation using the traffic flow simulation tool PELOPS. The influence of the platooning system on the traffic efficiency is investigated as well. In the SARTRE platooning system the lead vehicle is driven manually by a human driver. The following vehicles follow the trajectory of the lead vehicle. Thus the lead vehicle driver has a huge responsibility. In order to improve the safety in a platoon, different advance driver assistance systems (ADAS) are installed in the lead vehicle to support the lead vehicle driver. Besides, for the control algorithm, detailed information about the platoon vehicles and the other vehicles are very important. In order to improve the comfort and support the driver to find suitable platoons, a back office unit calculates a meeting point for the platoon and provides navigation instructions to the drivers. This paper provides an overview of the SARTRE project and presents first PELOPS simulation results of the concept phase, which shows the impact of platoons on the traffic flow efficiency. Furthermore the ADAS systems as well as the sensor fusion of the platoon vehicles and the concept of the back office are introduced. The impact of the platooning system on the important aspects of traffic, namely the traffic flow efficiency, the safety and the comfort aspect is also discussed in this paper.
