Second law analyses have been applied to an LPG fuelled SI engine under HVIR in this study. A comprehensive model for valve-closed period was constructed. The following conclusions are made: Cylinder pressure decreases significantly as the spark timing is changed from normal timing to the most retarded one. Retarded ignition timing makes the combustion process start at a less-than-optimum point and reduces peak cylinder pressures. Availability transfer due to heat decreases significantly during combustion by retarding the ignition timing. When the spark timing is changed from normal timing to most retarded position, the availability transfer due to work decreases. Availability destroyed due to the combustion process increases as the start of combustion is retarded. When the spark timing is changed from normal timing to the most retarded case, the cylinder availability at the end of expansion increases. On the other hand, availability transfer due to net exhaust flow is significantly increased with IR. But a further increase in the ignition retard causes a reduction in the percentage of fuel availability for net exhaust flow.
