The introduction of the European Stage 3B and US EPA Tier 4 Interim exhaust emissions legislation for off-highway engines has set a major challenge for the off-highway vehicle and engine industry. As with previous emissions standards for diesel engines, the fuel injection system will make a significant contribution to the attainment of the latest exhaust emissions standards. With the introduction of these new standards we will see the transition from mechanical fuel systems to high pressure common rail fuel systems on engines at power ratings down to 37 kW and below. There will be significant increase of injection pressure, up to 2000 bar, in addition the engines will employ complex turbo charging technologies, exhaust gas recirculation, and exhaust after-treatment devices. The addition of these technologies to this engine market will rely on sophisticated control systems to deliver the new exhaust emissions standards with improvements in fuel consumption and the market driven reliability. This paper describes the development of the Delphi Multec common rail system to meet the European Stage 3B and US EPA Tier 4 Interim off-highway exhaust emissions regulations for light and medium duty commercial vehicles. The paper details the analysis of the product with respect to market requirements, demonstrated FIE (Fuel Injection Equipment) performance and the development of the fuel injection system, pump, rail, injectors, electronic control module and software control strategies. Finally the validation of the robustness and reliability of the system is described.
