When studying the climatic aging of polymer composite materials, it is necessary to control and take into account the following processes and transformations: binder plasticization by atmospheric moisture; swelling (thickness gain) upon moisture sorption; binder destruction under the action of solar UV radiation and air oxygen; binder hydrolysis by moisture; binder postcuring activated by temperature and the plasticizing moisture effect; misalignment of organic fibers under solar UV irradiation, hygrothermal cycling, and mechanical loading; structural relaxation and shrinkage of fibers, forming the frame made of the reinforcing filler; structural relaxation of the binder; formation of pores, microcracks, and other microdefects in the binder bulk and at the polymer filler interface; and the formation of surface crazes, laminations, and large defects. The quantitative control of the listed transformations occurring upon exposure to natural climatic conditions forms the basis for a reliable prediction of PCM mechanical properties for a given exploitation period.
