The changing nature of the induction current field during static induction heating test is investigated by electromagnetic-transient thermal analysis. It is found that the induction current during static heating can be given approximately by a function of the location and temperature. The functions which give the initial induction current, l0, and the current reduction ratio, w, are identified from static heating tests. Plate temperatures during induction line heating tests are estimated by analyzing heat transfer and heat conduction updating l0 distributions at every time step so that its distribution around the coil equals to that in the static heating test. The estimated plate temperatures agree well with those measured. The inherent deformations generated in these line heating tests are calculated by thermal elasto-plastic FE analysis. The plate temperature histories derived from l0 and w identified in the static heating test are given as the thermal loads in this analysis. The calculated inherent deformations agree well with the ones measured. This demonstrates the validity of the proposed method for estimating the temperature and inherent deformation during induction line heating processes.
