The implementation of an electric axle in hybrid and electric vehicles is a sufficient solution to reduce green house gases. In hybrid vehicles, this solution allows to boost, recuperate, to drive pure electric and to shift the load of the combustion engine to areas with high efficiency. Many OEMs require the installation of a disconnect clutch for electric axles in HEV applications in order to reduce the drag losses of the electric axle at high vehicle speeds. Instead of a disconnect clutch, for EVs there is the demand to install a parking pawl mechanism. Solution: The same package space is used to install a disconnect clutch (for hybrid applications) - called e_rad or a parking pawl (for EVs) - called e_drive. MAGNA has developed a family of electric axles in three classes with a power range of 15kW to 110kW (15kW-35kW / 36kW-60kW / 61kW-110kW). Main goal is to cover most of the applications with a high amount of carry over parts to gain volume effects and decrease development costs. To minimize the size of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) - and therefore the costs, MAGNA has developed a combined cooling concept (water- and oil cooling). In this concept an oil flow is applied to the end-windings of the stator. This allows to optimize the continuous and the peak power ability of the electric motor and to minimize the size of the motor. The oil is the same used within the gear box. The water jacket cooling of the gear box housing transfers the heat of the stator winding outside diameter and the heated oil (of the end-windings of the stator) to the environment. The integration of active components like motor, inverter, gearbox and cooling circuit is one of the most challenging tasks in the development of the MEA program.
