This paper introduces a high-performance, cost-effective hybrid technology and system configuration to improve the fuel savings and reduce the Green Houses Gas (GHG) emissions of off-road vehicles, in particular a hybrid street sweeper. GHG emission reduction and fossil fuel economy have become serious issues globally. The goals of the European Commission's agreements with the European Automotive Manufactures Association (ACEA), the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), and the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA) to reduce CO2 emissions to 140g/km by 2009 have now been achieved. The Commission has now developed a mandatory CO2 emissions program that will apply to passenger cars as well as commercial vehicles in Europe. Energy conservation for all vehicles is now a key worldwide issue. Off-road vehicles like forklifts, construction equipment, garbage trucks, and street sweepers may require even more strict GHG emission reduction regulations, since these will see the most use in urban and residential areas. This paper discusses a newly-developed off-road vehicle, a Hybrid Street Sweeper, to demonstrate the fuel savings and reduced GHG emissions that can be achieved using the environmentally friendly DLCAPTM as an Energy Storage System (ESS). The hybrid sweeper application is ideal for this purpose, owing to its slow speed and stop-and-go operating cycle. This system has achieved an approximately 30% fuel savings compared to conventional systems. It was developed by US Hybrid and the United Chemi- Con / Nippon Chemi-Con Group, which provided DLCAPTM for the ESS.
