This article has presented comparative studies of the structural performance characteristics of a square and an inclined IRJ (insulated rail joints). Independently obtained probing statistical moments parameters with proven sensitivity to changes in the output signals were employed to characterize the complex structural response behaviour of the two IRJ systems. The comparative results are summarized as follows. 1. The vertical impact strains of the inclined IRJ were smaller than those of the square IRJ. However, the inclined IRJ has exhibited higher statistical variability in the peak vertical strains than the square IRJ due to higher sensitivity of the wheel load (contact) position. 2. The probing statistical moments parameters values obtained using the vertical impact strains were found to slightly increase with the passage of service life for both the square and the inclined IRJs. 3. The inclined IRJ experienced higher shear strains near the throat of the rails than the square IRJ. Hence, it can be stated that the square IRJ exhibited better resistance to web shear than the inclined IRJ for similar traffic loading. 4. Both IRJs exhibited similar bending strains during the early stages of the service life of the two IRJs as their bending stiffnesses are unaffected by the manner in which the cut angle was positioned. 5. The inclined IRJ has exhibited higher vertical load and bending responses towards the end of the observation period reported in this article (month 3). The lower vertical impact strains observed for the inclined IRJ (than the square IRJ) may not necessarily provide a definite conclusion that the inclined IRJ is the better option since it appears suffering from higher shear strains. Finally, a generalized conclusion may not be appropriate as only one specimen of each IRJ has been tested.
