Due to the continuously increasing efficiency, light-emitting diodes (LED) find new application areas. They are currently used in automotive lighting for daytime running lights and rear lamps. Gradually their usage is expanding to function as high and low beam. In the present article the formation of synthetic jets and their advantages were explained. Synthetic jets allow the directed cooling of LED-devices with low noise and energy consumption. A simulation method to calculate the jets' flow and heat transfer as well as the status of its validation by comparison with measurements was shown. It became obvious that an improvement of flow and temperature simulation is necessary. To classify the intensity of the found swirl, a characteristic number has to be defined. PIV measurements have to be made to enable a quantitative comparison of simulation and experiment. The simple rebuild of a R8 LED headlamp using Nuventix SynJet-Coolers was presented. Temperature measurements on the rebuild and the serial headlamp were accomplished. The temperature level of the SynJet-cooled LEDs lay 15 °C over the serial. As a next step the construction of a headlamp with LEDs cooled by impinging synthetic jets will be carried out. Simulations and the experience obtained during the measurements will be utilized to design it.
