The advantages and disadvantages of simulation, test bench testing and road tests have been presented. It has been shown that they are not redundant but that they need to complement one another in order to meet the requirements of an efficient development process. Therefore the compatibility of all software tools is required. The new power train and hybrid test bench of the IVK (Institute for Internal Combustion Engines and Automotive Engineering) helps to optimize the interaction between simulation and test because simulation models can be easily integrated into the automation system. The test bench offers a lot of different configurations matching many requirements. Components can be simulated or replaced by real components. Measured road load profiles from road tests can be used on the test bench and the measured data from the test bench can easily be exported to the simulation.
