Lithium battery safety always is a key issue of user's concern. PTC, CID, safety vent and protected circuit are capable to handle the abuse conditions, such as external short, over charge. However, they can not protect battery when internal short happened. MCL of ITRI has developed an oligomer, STOBA, which is added in the cell, to protect the battery from internal short. A nail test with a 2.5 mm diameter nail shows that batteries with STOBA are all pass the test, and batteries without STOBA are all fail. Battery with STOBA discharged at 5C-rate has the similar capacity as the battery without STOBA. In other words, STOBA additive introduces no performance penalty to the battery. The batteries with STOBA perform even better cycle life character at high temperature than the batteries without STOBA. DSC test indicates STOBA postpones the reaction onset temperature of the electrode and reduces the reaction heat, and that makes STOBA to protect battery form internal short.
